Features of STEPS
PAES Lab (Practical Assessment Evaluation System) was added to our facility through a partnership with the Guilford County School System. The lab offers individuals the opportunity to practice job skills. Through these experiences, instructors are able to determine an individuals interest, as well as their level of skill on job tasks. Participants in OPTIONS, Summer Search and Supported Employment, as well as students from area high schools use the lab.
Summer Search
The goal of this program is to provide students, during the summer months, with opportunities that will strengthen community inclusion skills. The concept is based on the belief that summer jobs, peer interaction, and involvement in community life are valued experiences for all youth and should be available for teens with developmental disabilities. Students are given opportunities to develop job-readiness skills, community exploration, job internships, peer socialization, and community service.
Supported Employment
Supported Employment insures that adults with a developmentally disability are assessed by professional staff to determine vocational interests and skills. Employment Specialists (job coaches) are assigned to each individual to assist with job placement and training that will meet the needs of both the employer and the employee. The Employment Specialist accompanies the individual to the work place and assists with training--gradually decreasing assistance as the employee becomes increasingly independent. In addition, these specialists can provide intervention services, when needed, to individuals already employed but in need of assistance to maintain their employment.
Long Term Support
Community Resources Specialists provide longer term support for those persons already employed. This help includes regular contact with the employee through meetings, job-site visits, employer contacts, and a monthly job club.
